DAY THREE Early this morning, you will leave Johannesburg, the “city of gold”, and travel across the Highveld to Machadodorp. Having descended the precipitous heights of the ruggedly beautiful escarpment, the transition from the Highveld to the subtropical Lowveld, with its well-watered acacia and mopane woodland, is complete.
Arrival at the Protea Hotel Kruger Gate, where accommodation has been arranged for two nights in standard rooms with private en-suite bathroom facilities, will be around 3:30pm.
You will depart on a late afternoon “open vehicle” safari game drive in pursuit of the “Big 5” before returning to the Protea Hotel Kruger Gate for dinner served “under the stars” [weather permitting] in a traditional African boma.
The Kruger National Park stretches almost two hundred and twenty miles along the Mozambique border. The savanna bushveld (bush-covered plains) is beautiful and encompasses a variety of ecosystems. South Africa is one of the best places in the world for viewing the “Big 5” – elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo. You will see cheetah, zebra, giraffe, hippo and wildebeest and antelope in their natural habitat plus countless other creatures. You will get up close and want to see everything and in the Kruger National Park, one of the most famous game reserves in the world, you can!
Back at the lodge, you are at leisure to enjoy the lodge facilities and guest areas.
DAY FOUR Today you will enjoy two open vehicle game drives in search of wildlife.
The Kruger National Park contains an incredible variety of flora and fauna—over 1100 species of trees and free-roaming wildlife. But the Park is best known for the “Big Five” game species—elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, and rhino—all of which occupy the Park in substantial numbers. Most visitors come to the Park hoping to spot some of these magnificent creatures.
Elephants are found everywhere in the Park and can be seen in groups of around thirty. Most people are lucky enough to observe at least one lion pride during their stay because there are about 1800 lions scattered throughout the Park. They are usually found in the grasslands, where their favorite prey of zebra and wildebeest are found. About 1000 leopards reside in the Park, but they are shy animals that hunt during the night and hide away during the daytime. Even if a leopard does venture into open ground, it is difficult to spot its tawny-yellow body with black rosette spots because it blends in perfectly with its surroundings.
In addition to the “Big Five”, crocodiles and hippos are abundant near the rivers, and populations among the various antelope species are large—especially the Impala, which number about 120,000. Then there are the kudu, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, waterbuck (Nyala), warthog, sable, reedbuck, tsessebe, eland, hyena, wild dog, and other animals too numerous to name!
Bird species are also abundant—half of the birds of South Africa find a home here! The Bataleur is probably the most handsome of the birds of prey, and the Martial Eagle, though it prefers more mountainous areas, is a common sight as well.
DAY FIVE You will enjoy the great African bushveld once more this morning during a 4 ½-hour “open vehicle” safari game drive. A mid-morning, a stop is made for breakfast.
Later, you will return to the Protea Hotel Kruger Gate to check-out and prepare for your departure back to Johannesburg which is scheduled for around noon.
You will arrive back into Johannesburg between 6:30pm or 7:00pm where upon arrival you immediately depart on a flight for Cape Town.
Upon arrival into Cape Town International Airport, you are met by a representative of 2AFRIKA and transferred to your hotel where accommodation has been arranged for 6 nights in standard rooms with private en-suite bathroom facilities.
You are at leisure to settle into your new environment. (Breakfast, In-Flight Meals)
DAY SIX Today you will take a city sightseeing tour. You'll go to Kloof Nek and the magnificent Table Mountain. Ascend to the summit (weather permitting) in the new revolving cable car. See wild flowers and the famous "Siver Tree". Marvel at a birds-eye view of Cape Town and its beaches. On a clear day you'll see a panaromic view including Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned and Cape Point. Later you'll descend from the Upper Cableway station to an awaiting motorcoach. (Add-on fare for ascent of Table Mountain).
Continue the drive to the city center past landmarks such as Castle of Good Hope and City Hall. Down Adderley Street you'll see St. George's Cathedral, the Anglican Diocese of Nobel Peace Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and visit the South African Museum, noted for its natural history and anthropology collection.
You will visit the Company Gardens and the Malay Quarter (also known as the Bo-Kaap) which means "Above Cape" because of its location up against the slopes of Table Mountain. In the early 18th century, thousands of slaves from Java, Ceylon and other Far Eastern regions were brought to Cape Town. After slavery was abolished, their descendants, known as the Cape Malay's, settled here.
Later you proceed around Table Bay to the Milnerton Lighthouse from where you can see Table Mountain from the same perspective as the early settlers did when they sailed into Table Bay. (Breakfast Included)
